Body Mass Index

B.M.I. is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of life-threatening diseases. The score is valid for both men and women, but it may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. It may also underestimate body fat in older people and others who have lost muscle mass.

To determine your B.M.I.:
• enter your weight and height using standard measures
• click on "Calculate" and your B.M.I. will appear in the calculator

Portables to power PC industry

The XO laptop may have been created to help children in developing nations, but its influence is likely to be felt far beyond the classroom.

The PC industry is going to be among the first to feel its impact in November 2007 when, for a week, the gadget goes on sale to almost anyone that wants one.

Before now few have had a chance to test out the capabilities of the device and properly compare it to the portable computers - laptops, palmtops and notebooks - available in high street stores and online.

But the sheer amount of features crammed in to the device combined with its low price may mean questions start to be asked of PC makers who typically charge a premium for portability.

Set Up a Linux Proxy Server with ease using Webmin

A proxy server is one of those ubiquitous servers that can offer up a number of possible services. But until the likes of Webmin arrived, setting up a proxy server in Linux was a daunting task, with configuration files filled with parent and sibling nodes that would give many a GUI-centric administrator a heart attack. Those days are gone; now, the Linux administrator has a number of GUI tools to choose from.

For the task of setting up a proxy server, none of those tools are better than Webmin. Its ease of installation and use far surpass its competition. On top of that, it's one of the few server administration tools that covers proxy configuration. In this article, I'll show you how it works.

What's Webmin?
Before we get into the thick of things, it might be best to let you know that Webmin is really just a front-end for the configuration of the Squid Proxy Server. Squid is a very powerful, flexible Web-caching proxy daemon. If you don't already know, Squid is configured in the /etc/squid/squid.conf file. The squid.conf file runs approximately 4,273 lines in length, so having a GUI that can handle nearly 100% of the configuration of this file is most helpful.

Basic Mac OS X Security

Well, now that we have a possible candidate for another Mac trojan (not a virus, not a worm, not an exploit, and not good code) I think now’s as good a time as any to cover some basic Mac OS X Security so that people not familiar with such things have more than an ice cube’s chance in Phoenix at keeping secure.

Mac OS X is a secure operating system in that it’s multi-user and has limits on what some user accounts can do. If an account is setup as a basic user, that user can only hurt himself, not the whole system or other users. However, in the interest of being “friendly” to new users, Apple leaves of a lot of the secure bits off for the first user created and this means that trojans like this week’s can cause some pretty nasty problems on your system.

Yet, all of this is easy to correct. Just run over the following and you should be well on your way to a protected computer.

Michael Vick Indicted On State Dogfighting Charges; Could Face Additional Five Years In Prison

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's chances of getting back on the football field were dealt a serious blow Tuesday (September 25) when a Virginia grand jury indicted him on state dogfighting charges.
According to CNN, the grand jury lodged two charges against Vick: one count of killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Those charges come on top of a recent plea agreement accepted by Vick on federal dogfighting charges, in which he admitted to bankrolling a dogfighting operation from his Virginia home (see "Michael Vick Pleads Guilty To Conspiracy"). The Associated Press reported that any animal-cruelty charge in Virginia is punishable with up to five years in prison; Vick admitted in his federal plea to helping kill six to eight dogs.

Jay-Z As The 'American Gangster': Does Hova's Life Compare To The '70s Drug Kingpin's Story?

In Ridley Scott's "American Gangster," Denzel Washington's character, Frank Lucas, is a ruthless drug lord who launches an empire with a popular product while his competition struggles to adapt to the changing market.
Sound familiar? Kind of? Well, there are some parallels between the career of Lucas (a real-life dealer in the 1970s) and Jay-Z's rise in the rap game. Jay said last week that seeing "American Gangster" led him to write a new album inspired by the film, with each song being his interpretation of various scenes from the movie, which comes out November 2.

Pop Sensation AJ Michalka Cast In Jackson’s ‘Lovely Bones’

She’s best known as one half of a powerhouse duo, but AJ Michalka is about to go solo in a big way, the 16-year-old singer beamed, revealing that she’s set to appear in Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” follow-up, “The Lovely Bones.”
“It’s like a dream role,” she enthused, nearly jumping up and down with excitement. “I’m playing the best friend of the girl who gets murdered. I was flipping out [when I heard I won the part]. I’m really, really stoked.”
The film, an adaptation from the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold, follows the aftermath of a young girl’s brutal rape and murder. The girl, 14-year-old Susie Salmon, watches her family and friends from the afterlife, observing them as they struggle to cope with her terrible demise.

The Rock's Role In 'Shazam': Should He Be Good Or Evil? You Decide!

Sometimes the hero, sometimes the villain, as a WWE wrestler in the late '90s, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson spent as much time inciting the crowd to boo and sneer as he did bringing them to their feet with show-stopping bravado.
The more things change, it seems, the more they stay the same. Now a successful movie star, the Rock says he's been in discussions to play both the good and bad guy in the upcoming superhero flick "Shazam" — and he wants MTV fans to help him decide which one he should tackle.
"Shazam, of course, I would love to play. They approached me about [Captain Marvel] and [villain] Black Adam as well," he revealed. "We've been meeting for months. We're toying with either one. I think it's up to the fans. Without question."

Ne-Yo Shouts Out To Britney Spears: I'm Still Rooting For You. Come Get These Songs

Take it from a man who has lived here most of his life: If you go to LV, "Don't gamble," Ne-Yo advises. "If you do, don't gamble much."

In the middle of VMA weekend, the singer/songwriter found some time to leave the busy Strip and go back to one of his old neighborhoods, in Henderson, Nevada, just 20 minutes away. MTV News went along for the ride.

"In the very beginning, I was living a good 45 minutes away from the Strip," he says as the adventure begins. "We used to stay at this little project out there that everybody called the Gardens. At that time it was me, my mom, my grandmother and my sister. We had two bedrooms. Me and my sister shared a bedroom. My mom had a room. If my grandmother's back was hurting, she would get me and my sister and we would share the couch. It was the neighborhood. It was what it was: a little violent, a little dirty ... I lost one or two friends over there.

Making the move to the Mac

Part Two
Last time round, we cautiously dipped a toe into the Mac development waters from the perspective of a Windows programmer with RAD experience. Along the way, I briefly looked at the rudiments of Objective-C syntax, and I described terms such as 'framework' and 'Cocoa'. (Remember, the idea here is not to turn you into a killer Mac coder, but rather to look at the essentials of mainstream Mac development using terminology that's familiar to a .NET, Delphi, C++ or VB developer.)
With this as a basis, let's turn our attention to Xcode and Interface Builder. These are the two main development tools used by a Cocoa developer. (As I said last time, it's perfectly possible to create Cocoa apps using only command-line tools. It's not nice, but if you're that way inclined...)

Jesse James: Best Western, By Kurt Loder

Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck lead a killer cast in what could be the movie of the year. The outlaw Jesse James was murdered in April of 1882 by a treacherous subordinate named Robert Ford. He was shot in the head from behind in the living room of the rented house in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he lived with his wife and two children. (They were in another room at the moment of his impromptu execution.) By the time he was killed, James had been robbing banks, trains and stagecoaches for 16 years, and had a $10,000 reward on his head. He was 34 years old.
These final facts about one of the most heavily romanticized desperadoes of the Old West are by now widely known. Jesse was well on the way into legend in his own lifetime, celebrated in dime novels as a frontier Robin Hood and eagerly promoted, for political purposes, by a Kansas City newspaper editor who sought to portray him as a defiant guerilla in the recently-crushed Confederate cause. James has also been the subject of dozens of movies dating back to the 1920s, the most curious surely being "Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter," by the awesomely prolific B-movie director William Beaudine. (He also shot a companion cheapie that same year called "Billy the Kid Versus Dracula." But I digress.)

Jay-Z At Work On Concept Album Inspired By 'American Gangster' Film

Some people really like movies. Jay-Z apparently loves them. At the very least, he has a particularly strong affection for the upcoming Denzel Washington flick "American Gangster."
The MC/ Def Jam president told The New York Times Thursday (September 20) that he was so moved by a recent screening of the Ridley Scott-directed film that he began recording a new project, appropriately named American Gangster. The album is slated to be released November 6 on Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Records, following the November 2 box-office debut of the movie.

ScribbleScreen

ScribbleScreen is a presentation tool allowing you to write directly onto the screen, drawing the attention of the audience to items which can be in windows from completely separate applications, high-light items as you speak about them, sketch a quick diagram or type some text.

ScribbleScreen works by capturing an image of the Macintosh screen at the moment it is launched; thereafter drawing occurs on top of this screen image as a background. This background can take over the whole screen (the other applications still running, but hidden) or can be in a smaller side window so you can see the other applications.
